The secret to staying slim

The January tips are coming to an end so here is a little secret that will change your waist line forever

Your blood can only take on average, between 5 and 7 tea  spoons of sugar at any one time. When you go over your body’s sugar limit the body releases a hormone called insulin to reduce the blood sugar levels. Insulin takes sugar and then converts it into fat.

Breakfast is often 80 to 95% carbohydrate, typically consisting of a morning cereal with milk or maybe a slice of toast. The body breaks this down into glucose and releases it into the blood creating a sugar spike. Now you have low blood sugar levels, so your body goes into starvation mode and holds on to your fat stores. Later, having a high carbohydrate lunch will start the process all over again. It is only a small amount of fat you are adding to your body on a daily basis, but it doesn’t take long to add up! A good rule of thumb to make sure that you do not exceed your blood sugar limit, take the total amount of carbohydrate on any drink or food packet and divide by 5.

For example, a box of Special K has 75g per 100g of carbohydrates; the serving suggestion is 29g. We get our clients to pour their normal bowl of cereal or pasta and then we weigh it. We get a minimum of 60g, up to 160g per portion! Take 60g of special K giving us 40g of carbohydrates per bowl. Divide this by 5 and you get 8 tea spoons of carbohydrates. This will spike the blood sugar and prompt insulin secretion converting the blood sugar into fat stores. Add milk, a slice of toast or fruit and you will increase the amount of tea spoons of sugar to almost double!

Starting the day the right way is key to losing weight and staying in shape. Many people struggle with this as they cannot find enough time or just cannot find an appetite for breakfast.

Try having a protein balanced meal replacement to get into having breakfast as habit.

Challenge 4 the Week

We often eat too many of the same types of foods, this limits the variety of vitamins and minerals we get.

This weeks challenge is to try something new or something you have not had for a while.
